Hi friends: These forecasts are in effect for the two weeks surrounding the Moon cycle.
On Friday, February 14, we experienced a super-charged Full Moon in Leo.
DISCIPLINED LOVE
Oh, it would be so nice to discuss the virtues of Leo love
with hearts and flowers, in line with Valentine’s Day weekend. But this Full Moon was
squared by Saturn in Scorpio, giving us a jab that love sometimes doesn’t come
easy.
Leo at its best is filled with generosity, love, and loyalty.
The Lion is ruled by the heart, and wants to shower others with affection and
receive connection in turn. Leo, a fire sign, basks in the gaze of a lover, and
glows bright in return on the best of days.
Yet there can be a shadow side to Leo energy: narcissism or self-indulgence. Sometimes, Leo is about “Me, Me, Me.” All signs of the zodiac
have a shadow – I’m not picking on Leo! Right now, the Sun is in Aquarius so
the reactive response to a selfish Leo demand for love and attention is the
cold shoulder of Aquarius: I will not
meet your personal needs, and I will be hard and fast in this manner. You must
learn to exist without my attention.
Ugh. Who wants that kind of combo on Valentine’s weekend,
right? This lesson is further driven home by the presence of a 90-degree square
by Saturn in Scorpio: the hard knocks school of intimacy. Overcoming self-absorption is tough, especially when we’re still working through a bunch of baggage that keeps us in anxiety about relationships.
We fear the other person may hurt us, or neglect us, or abandon us – so we pull
the reins in tighter to protect our hearts. The result: our
partners, our family, and our friends may feel we are closing our selves off to
them, even when we mean well.
So how do we overcome self-absorption to emerge as better lovers? The first step is awareness, of course - noticing when we're overly fixed on OUR needs or self-preservation. The second step is practice - fake it til you make it, and try to serve your lover even if it feels foreign at that moment. Do something to pull yourself out of your self and show compassion and attentiveness. It may take a few tries, but if your beloved is a true Valentine, he or she will start to notice, and respond in kind. Practical love is often about service, and discipline. As Erich Fromm writes in his classic The Art of Loving, “Love isn't something natural. Rather it requires discipline,
concentration, patience, faith, and the overcoming of narcissism. It
isn't a feeling, it is a practice.”
And then there is the lighter side of Leo... Play!
LET YOUR INNER KID OUT
To be a kid again... This is another hint of the Full Moon in Leo. This past
weekend, my boyfriend and I prowled around the Oakland Zoo amongst Lions and
Tigers and Bears, Oh My! My Inner Kid gazed in awe at
giraffes, hyenas, gibbons, baboons and squirrel monkeys. The zany zebras were
one of the day’s highlights, along with a pair of beautiful North African camels
necking in the setting sun.
The next day the animal antics continued: my beloved and I
hiked over to the horse stables in the open space near my house, apropos as we
have just kicked off the Year of the Horse. Once again, the child in me reveled in the
pleasure of cozying up to large creatures. I delighted in petting the horse in
that ultra-soft snout spot on its nose. I
highly recommend spending time around these gorgeous animals – your Inner Kid
will love you for it.
So, in tune with the Full Moon in Leo, it’s time to play
