Full Moon of the Yogi ~ Guru Purnima ~ Transforming Our Losses

Erin Reese Teaching Yoga on Guru Purnima 2017

Namaste dear friends:

Today is the Full Moon in Capricorn, a lunation known as Guru Purnima – the full moon of the teacher! Yogis and sages, Buddhists and Hindus typically pay respects to their teachers on this day and express their gratitude. I was deeply honored and grateful to celebrate this day by teaching a yoga class at a local hospice organization where I provide grief and bereavement counseling.

In 2010, I became a Certified Yoga Instructor at Swami Vivekenanda University in Bangalore, South India. While I don’t teach a regular yoga asana class, I practice regularly and am happy to offer this gift to those in need. This morning, on this important Full Moon of the Teacher, I taught a very gentle hour and a half class called “Gentle Yoga for Grief and Loss,” suitable for all levels.

Seven wonderful women showed up. One of them had just lost her sister, and was far too distraught to move about on the mat; she participated in the whole class sitting in a comfortable chair in silence, breathing and being. Her energy and participation were just as palpable, just as meaningful, as those of us doing the whole postures. Yoga is very much a state of being, a way of becoming seated in the Self, the ground of being.

Other folks had various neck, knee, and back limitations; we made modifications with pillows and props throughout. Following my intuition and the energy of the group, I placed particular emphasis on relaxing the muscles of the jaw. At one point, the whole group of us began shaking and bouncing, moving out the excess stress and tension that grief adds to the body. Our arms upraised, we all felt the electricity in the room. I explained that in Buddhist teachings, we transform ‘poison into nectar,’ or amrita, and in this same way, through physical asana postures, we transform the stress and congestion of grief into life force energy, or prana.

Loosened up in body, mind, and spirit, the emotional body is much more able to flow and express itself without resistance. Grieving is hard physical and mental work, whether experienced through death of a loved one, or loss of a life chapter, or end of a relationship. Yoga is a supportive and gentle way to facilitate the grief process, and restore balance in a taxed emotional system. Many tears flowed easily in savasana, resting pose. Hearts were opened, minds settled down, bodies relaxed.

Together, on this full moon of the guru, the teacher within and without, we came together to transform our losses and ease our personal and universal suffering just that little bit more…

Here is the list of poses we practiced in our 90-minute session:

Easy Yoga for Grief and Loss:

1.      Meditate and Breath

2.      Warmups: shoulder shrugs,

shoulder rolls, neck stretches, neck rolls

3.      Cat / cow (from table top)

4.      Child’s pose

5.      Sphinx pose

6.      Legs up the wall

7.      Side twists

8.      Happy Baby

9.      Savasana deep relaxation

10.  Closing meditation. Namaste.

OM SHANTI SHANTI SHANTI

Today, I bow in gratitude to my Teacher, advaita master Ramesh Balsekar (1917-2009), and to all of my great Teachers, past, present and future. I bow to each of You, whom I learn from every day. I bow to Mother Nature and the Goddess Shakti, the Divine Feminine. She is my Mother, and flows through me and of me. I bow to Shiva, Consciousness, the Self, and Existence… here and now, here and now. Never not here. Here and now. Sat Chit Ananda – being *consciousness *peace. Namaste.

In yogic traditions, today’s Capricorn Full Moon is a celebration of ageless wisdom, known as “Guru Purnima” – Full Moon of the One Who Removes Darkness.” It is the lunation dedicated to our teachers, mentors, elders, sages, and spiritual masters – and for some of us, the Guru.

This is Wise Moon, signified by the reverent ruler of Capricorn, Saturn, who upholds That Which is Old, that which endures and is meaningful, including ancient texts, and traditions. Whether the path of jñāna (wisdom), bhakti (devotion), asana yoga, or deep communion with a Wise One, it’s a potent time to honor them, and give thanks.

At this Guru Purnima, we reflect on those people, places, and situations who remove darkness in our lives. Those who aid us profoundly on the journey, and awaken our consciousness. Those who stretch us to grow beyond that which we thought possible. Those who inspire us, counsel us, soothe us. Those who have traversed further afield in mind or miles, to bestow us with gifts brought home from the pilgrimage or voyage.

These are our Great Teachers embodied, pointing the way, prodding us to claim that timeless wisdom for ourselves...and make it our own.

Guru Brahma Guru Vishnu Guru Devo Maheshwara
Guru Sakshat Param Brahma Tasmai Shri Gurave Namah
Thank you, beloved Ramesh!

The Perfect Remains

Om
Purnamadah Purnamidam
Purnat Purnamudachyate
Purnasya Purnamadaya
Purnameva Vashishyate
Om shanti, shanti, shanti

Om.
That is perfect,
This is perfect.
When perfection is taken from the perfect,
Perfect alone remains.
Om, peace, peace, peace

~Isha Upanishad

Today is the Mahasamadhi Day of my beloved teacher and guru, Ramesh Balsekar (1917-2009).
Mahasamādhi (the great and final samādhi) is the act of consciously and intentionally leaving one's body at the time of death. ...

My teacher and guru left the body in Mumbai, India on September 27, 2009. A triple 9-9-9 day of the Great Master. I am feeling extremely close to my teacher lately, as I am transcribing material for my second book. He is with me in every way. However, the guru is no longer a separate person for me; the guru lives on, in my very heart. He has become me, and I am him. We are That.

Needless to say, the last few years since Ramesh has left the building have been incredibly exciting, personally and transpersonally. The evolution continues! As many spiritual masters have said, “Awakening is just the beginning.” That’s for darn sure. The evolution of consciousness, sans identification with the ego structure, is like Alice walkin’ through Wonderland, every day.

Two years ago, alongside my regular astro-intuitive services, I began offering one-on-one spiritual attunement sessions to those who feel drawn to my teachings. I conduct these via Skype or telephone, or in person if we’re in the same neck of the woods. I invite those individuals to work with me who are sincere spiritual seekers who know they need help at this ‘stage,’ like they’ve hit a ceiling in suffering, or try as they might (and they’ve worked so hard!) they can’t break through the attachment to the maya's (mind’s) incessant rampage.  If you’re one of those folks, you may want to schedule a session with me.

In the last month, I’ve started sitting regularly with a small group of individuals here in the San Francisco Bay Area who are dedicated to enlightenment. If a person is already awake (meaning, the attachment to the ego structure has dissolved and there’s no longer a calcified hook to the separate ‘me’ self), then they are being attuned to stabilize in their awakening.

On this super-powered Mahasamadhi day, in eternal gratitude I bow my head to the feet of my beloved teacher and guru, Ramesh Balsekar (1917-2009), as masterful sage and divine embodiment of truth. And to the Goddess, Mother of the Universe, and to Shiva, the Is-ness that is All.

We are the Source, the Self.
We Are That.

Namaste, beloveds!
Erin

LISTEN HERE TO THE UPANISHADS:

In the state of self-realization,
all separation between God and the devotee disappears,
and the goal and the path become one.
All separation between the interconnected opposites disappears
and the split-mind is healed into its wholeness and holiness.
Indeed, worshipping and not worshipping,
action and non-action
lose their separateness and opposition
because all that happens
(the doing and the non-doing)
is spontaneous.
It is for this reason that the state of enlightenment
is beyond words and silence
and is described as indescribable,
and the Vedas at the end of an intense effort
confess their helplessness
in the words of Neti, Neti
(not this, not that).

~ Ramesh Balsekar
