New Moon in Sagittarius: Commit to Your Spirit!

"Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars."
~ Casey Kasem, American Top 40

This Sunday night, December 17, we have a New Moon in the mutable fire sign of Sagittarius, the Archer. Most of us have been feeling the buildup to this lunation for a while - that feeling that something big, something new is bubbling up in our lives. What makes it extra juicy is that we are simultaneously stretched, pulled toward our greatest visions of expansion and growth – hallmarks of Jupiter-ruled Sagittarius – AND challenged by restrictive Saturn at the same time.

We are in the last few days of Saturn’s journey through Sagittarius: the godfather of worldly work and karma finally moves into his home sign of Capricorn on December 19. But! Just before he settles into earthier climes of Cappy, he has to make his Big Point by forcing us to COMMIT. In the tone of fiery Sag, we must take a firm stand for what we need to grow toward in body, mind, and especially spirit.

Reaching for the Stars - and Meeting Them!

I love the energies afoot. Things feel titillating and challenging, zealous and huge, while at the same time achievable and grounded and real. I love that we are called to commit to flying high, to going above and beyond our previous limits, while being forced to have an action plan. To take a stand. To show up and suit up, set goals, and be realistic.

What does it look like to have our spirit tell us we must shoot for the moon, while keeping one foot on the ground? Quite simply put, it means: results! We don’t just reach for the stars… we actually reach the stars!

But First! Weed Out What's In the Way

With Jupiter’s October 2017 entry into depth-intensity-intimacy-oriented Scorpio, we know we have to have the uncomfortable conversations with ourselves, our teams, our loved ones in order to thrive; the only alternative is to deteriorate. Whatever is toxic, poison, or unhealthy has to come up this year and be purged. So look at it this way: if you have to have a revealing conversation with your boss, your spouse, your therapist about the hardest thing, the issue that may have shame, or guilt, or terror – there’s your answer. You need to get it up and out – expose it in a way that feels safe and healthy for you of course – in order to find your true freedom. You must heed that call now; you want your Star Foundation to be built on healthy ground.

Now: Commit with Clarifying Conversations

Stern Saturn’s conjunction to this New Moon brings a strong tone of responsibility. Not coincidentally, in German, Stern means "star." Language reveals that lasting, bright star quality requires gravitas and authenticity! You owe it to yourself and to Life to speak up, use your words, and make tougher calls.

For many, Saturn is separating the wheat from the chaff and forcing us to eliminate anything holding us back. Another way this could show up is in having clarifying conversations. This could range from anything to the infamous DTR ("define the relationship") conversation between lovers, to having hard talks at work about responsibilities and duties, to financial discussions with family members that may at first seem uncomfortable, but will actually feel refreshing and liberating.

Whatever you take a stand for at this New Moon of Sagittarius will have far-reaching effects. Aim high. If you show a willingness to roll up your sleeves, to have difficult conversations, and trust your calling, you will be supported by Sir Saturn. You will be gifted with a solid scaffolding to build your dream, and you will REALize your greatest visions. Your spirit will thank you.

If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost;
that is where they should be.
Now put the foundations under them.
~ Henry David Thoreau

It's High-Scorpio Season: Plunge the Depths and Commit

We are knee-deep in Scorpio, fixed water sign of the serpent eagle, the phoenix, the scorpion. Even folks who are used to living with intensity find that high Scorpio-season stirs up the deepest, often the darkest emotions to be dealt with. It is a time to fear not. Face the shadows. Trust the transformation that wants – needs – to happen in your world. It’s time to plunge the depths.

I know it is scary. I know that Scorpio time can bring us to our knees. We want to hold onto the old way, the way that feels safe. But “safe” eventually turns on us. If we do not allow Consciousness to unfold in our bodies, minds, hearts, souls, it stagnates and becomes toxic. Scorpio wants us to transform poison into nectar. We face our demons, our bugaboos, the things we dread. We must actualize our potential. And at this time, this more than likely involves INTIMACY.

This means, we have to go deeper into “you and me,” and how we affect each other on core, survival levels. We may have to talk about finances (big money!). We may have to reveal - to ourselves and another - our sexual edges, taboos, the ‘verboten.’ We may have to commit to difficult actions that require self-sacrifice. We plunge deeper in order to fulfill our need for deep psychological development and growth.

In short, we may have to GO THERE.

As we gear up for the Scorpio New Moon (Saturday, November 18), we are also building on a very special conjunction of Jupiter and Venus in Scorpio, exact on Monday November 13. I believe the joining of these two benefactors, Jupiter-Zeus and Venus-Aphrodite, is bringing us each a new superpower. Ultimately, this cosmic meeting is revealing a deeper power of LOVE. Love that goes beyond culture, beyond conditions, beyond what we thought was possible.

In order to realize this superpower, however, we must COMMIT.

What do you need to commit to at this time, with not only your heart and mind, but with your BODY and BEING? Going into the grit now reveals that the power of love and commitment is a major transformational force. It will give you bravery, a strength beyond that which you’ve ever known. You will have a fierceness and resolve to do that which must be done, to realize your greatest potential. You may have to become more responsible to your self, your profession, your child, your partner, your bank account, your body. You will have to tolerate and work with more intensity in this area of life than you previously knew was possible. And as a result, this area of life will be completely empowered. GO THERE.

Let’s see what you’ve got.

Where are the Jupiter-Venus conjunction and New Moon occurring in your personal chart? Check to see which houses! The Jupiter-Venus conjunction November 13, 3:15 a.m. is at 7 degrees Scorpio, and the New Moon in Scorpio November 18, 3:42 a.m. PT is at 26 degrees Scorpio. Full Moon in Taurus: Inner Security & Shared Values

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
~Lao Tzu

Tonight, we have a Full Moon in the fixed earth sign of Taurus. During this lunation, we are reminded it’s not just what we want in life that makes us happy; it’s what we NEED that enables us to fulfill our deepest longings and to feel that earthy sense of calm.

Taurus the Bull teaches us that our peace of mind depends upon having and maintaining that which we VALUE. These could be actual material possessions such as a good computer, a home you own, a reliable car (remember the Ford Taurus?), top-notch sporting goods, or sturdy furniture. And, these values could be abstract ones that we cultivate, slowly and surely, over time. Good health is a perfect example.

How do we keep and maintain “abstract values”? We consistently INVEST our life force into them – time, money, energy, vitality – into them. Consider a few scenarios:
  • You come to realize that professional growth means more than just how much you earn: you also need to learn. So, in order to keep your brain happy, you sign up for a class at your local community college, or go back for that advanced degree you’ve always thought about getting.
  • You know that ample time spent in Nature feeds your soul, relaxes your nervous system, and provides healthy stimulation. So, you start a habit of booking a semi-annual backpacking trip or outing to Yosemite AND get it secured on the calendar far in advance. You guard that date.
  • You’ve learned that longevity in partnership is not to be taken for granted. It requires commitment – a willingness to work through the hard stuff. You forego an old pattern of disposable relationships and online dating in order to invest in one special person. You realize that it won’t be perfect overnight and that it takes time to trust deeply.
Starting to get the picture? Taurean building takes time, commitment, and durability.

Sharing Value in Relationship

This Full Moon is opposite Jupiter newly in Scorpio. Jupiter in Scorpio impels us to evolve, to consider the needs of the other in our most intimate relationships in order to grow and thrive. While these planets are in a challenging position to each other, there may be discussions of “how much is enough?” and “how do we meet both of our needs?” For example, you might want to fly to Hawaii for Thanksgiving, but your partner says airfares are too high, so let’s stay closer to home and save our hard-earned money. You’ll have to come up with a creative solution that meets both the budgetary needs and the urge to splurge on fun.

You may find that you do best with your partner when one person focuses on cooking up a good meal, and you work on the taxes or help the kids with their homework. Distribution of values, sharing the wealth. Our new one-year cycle of Jupiter in Scorpio is going to teach us a lot about depth and rebirth within the context of shared finances, intimate conversations about taboo and difficult subjects, and experiencing the rewards of a willingness to merge.

Slow and Sure Wins the Race

Building security is the theme. How do we prepare for the future in a way that honors our values and needs in the present? One of the ways is to move slowly. Realize that long-term thinking plays a part. Think about how your actions will affect your world six months from now, six years from now, three decades from now.  You’re here on Planet Earth for the long haul, after all.

Taurus is a fixed earth sign, so we know that it’s got to be solid. The Taj Mahal wasn’t built in a day (it actually took 22 years)! So even if we’re not aiming to create one of the Seven Wonders of the World, we are meant to keep an eye on the prize. Make your life an act of beauty, a work of art, and take the time you need to invest, little by little. You’ll get there.

Wishing you a nourishing Full Moon!

Full Moon in Aries: The 'I' of the Hurricane

Today we have the Full Moon in Aries, cardinal fire sign of the Ram. Aries takes initiative, doesn’t hold back, faces everything with an open heart and courage. Dives in, trusts the truth, asserts the self. At this time of the Full Moon, we are meant to stand tall in our selves, solar plexus shining bright, taking refuge in the ‘I' of the storm.

Aries’ spiritual statement is “I Am.” During this time of global stress – natural disasters and human catastrophe – it can be easy to get highly disturbed, agitated, and despairing. It’s easier to lose our footing, to get swept away ourselves into a sea of negativity and darkness. During chaotic cycles, it’s imperative to remember the Self, the I Am of our true nature. Sat Chit Ananda ~ being (truth), consciousness, peace (bliss).

There is a space and a place inside each of us that is 100% love, totally connected, pure presence. This is the ‘I’ in the hurricane. This is Aries’ I Am. I am here. I exist. I am awareness. Even while the world goes to hell in a hand basket around us, we can keep a cool head.

Aries is ruled by the head, and it is particularly important for Rams and those with strong Ram influences in their charts, to protect their heads from the sun, from injury, from a potentially harmful rush of blood to the head. When Aries keeps their head, the Ram becomes a fantastic force of nature: clear, calculated, confident. Unstoppable. Let us all practice this today.

Drop into your true nature. Aries is ruled by Mars, the warrior planet, and is the master martial artist. Stay in the hara, the svadisthana or second chakra. You may feel this “seat of the soul” most prominently in the sacral area, or in the pelvic bowl region.  This is your center, your place of rest. I often advise my clients and students to hang out here, in your ‘inner hammock.’

From this place, all action arises from the Self, the ground of being. It is particularly important to find this seat of resting consciousness in times of strife. From this place, we make calm, cool, pointed moves.

That's grounded and centered Aries.
Perfect action, right on time.
“If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too…”
~ Rudyard Kipling
